I've had the good fortunate of working with the people at Reckless before and when they contacted me to work with them a second time I knew I wanted to be involved. When they shared the shoot concept with me, I absolutely knew I wanted to be involved and I absolutely knew I wanted the shoot to happen immediately!
The shoot was intended to be a one-time project in terms of time behind the camera which is usually quite OK but in this case it was a little overwhelming considering there was going to be more than 20+ different models involved with the project! When I got the project details I was very excited as mentioned but lets face it … more than 20 models is a lot to deal with regardless of your experience level so I’d be lying if I said there weren’t some butterflies in the stomach.
Reckless is amazing to work with though and they definitely made this project, despite the large scope, a breeze. They know what they want, they have a very clear way of describing it and their team are full of professionals. We kickstarted the casting call and were quickly able to identify the models we needed to pull this off. We found a nice corner provided by Capitol Piazza, which is where their store is located, for the shoot and that was it … we were set and ready to go.
I stroll onto set and I felt like I walked into some kind of creatives gathering point (or a gathering of Pokemon trainers chasing a rare Pokemon). With no Pokemon in sight it was confirmed that this was going to be a very fun, exciting and creative filled shoot. Models of all ages everywhere I looked, crew setting up lights, props strung about the place and me smiling in the midst of it all. So much fun! I walked in pumped but seeing the organised madness in front of me only sent my excitement levels through the roof.
Despite the number of people involved, the shoot went smoothly from start to finish. Whether the models were young kids or whether they were the aunties on set, everyone executed their job like a true pro and that made my job so much easier. It was also such a pleasure seeing everyone interact together and get along.
The equipment I used for the shoot was provided by the always helpful Still Networks along with some super talented assistants from their team. Ill never stop saying that a skilled crew makes a huge difference in a shoot and Still Networks never lets me down in that respect! They did such a great job of adjusting the lights a couple times during the shoot which was a huge help in achieving an even but not too flat lighting on the models. To get a bit more technical for those of you who like the nitty gritty, we used 5 lights total and 4 of those were pointed to the ceiling and wall to achieve that even lighting. A single light was used in front of the models with a shoot through umbrella pointing top down to add a nice dimension to everyone in front of the camera. Sounds simple enough but again kudos to the Still Networks team for putting it all together! With the models and lights in place, I ended up shooting everyone in 3 sections broken down by colour since there were just so many models! The finished image above was composited together at the end.
This shoot is such a representation of Singapore for me. People of all races and ages with all sorts of different backgrounds came together for a shared goal and helped in each other in achieving it. I know I was there for a clothing brand but there was some patriotism hovering in the room for me.
My compliments to Reckless on a great concept and on another great line of clothing. My compliments to all the models and crew who took part that day as this was easily the largest number of people I worked with on a set on a one-day shoot. Everyone was a true professional and such a pleasure to work with!
