Happy 2015 guys! This is one of my favorite images that was created over the summer last year at NYC. For this shoot, I wanted to create and image with the idea of two sisters looking lost and alone, seemingly from another era. The idea was that they would be surrounded by motion blur of people just walking by as though time stood still for them. With that, I knew I had to find an amazing location with some serious architecture and history behind it, so I immediately thought of Grand Central Terminal. If you've been there, you would definitely agree that it's a really incredible train station. Getting a permit to shoot there wasn't as difficult as I thought it would be and after getting my team together in a few weeks, we were on our way!
With my camera fixed in position on a tripod, I brought in a strobe on a large soft box to freeze the two girls in action. My exposure was about 1.3s so as to capture some background ambient light as well as having it affect the outfits the girls were wearing. After getting the desired image of the girls, I then shot a couple of plates with a low shutter speed to capture the motion blur of people walking by. The motion blur was then composited into the final image through post processing. You can check out the lighting diagram below, it really isn't anything much!
Here's a behind the scenes shot taken by my friend Samuel. This was still during testing and the light was shifted after this shot!
Also, this photo has been selected as a Gold winner in the Graphis Photography Annual 2015! Yay!
