Portrait of local music maestro Mr Rufino Soliano
Mr Rufino Soliano! What an intriguing old man. I was semi-lost on the day of the shoot because I had switched to a nearby never-used-before studio, my usual one being not available. I ended up having to run around trying to find it until of course, I realize that it's in the building that my cab initially stopped in front of. Typical. So I, while panting and being out of breath, got to greet and shake the hand of this inspiring 82-year-old music maestro. Not exactly what I had in mind but he was incredibly sweet about it. Both his wife and daughter were on set too and they were just lovely, lovely people to work with.
This shoot took awhile to schedule due to Mr Rufino's health complications but I'm really glad that I got to photograph him. The way he carried himself and the whole demeanor he had, his quiet confidence, it was really something that could be felt.
This portrait was a commission from NLB and I have to say, I really enjoy getting projects like these. Meeting someone as inspiring as Mr Rufino Soliano is always an honor and I hope I never stop being grateful for such opportunities (:
Shot this with modelling light for so I could shoot with a wide aperture. As the studio did not have a big softbox, I substituted it with two smaller ones. Pulled it all the way to the side to create contrast. The lines on his face was something I wanted to show instead of hiding with flat light. A strip light was then added to backlit him as a finishing touch.
Love to know what you guys think (:
