4 Lighting Diagrams

Model: Kyiona Carswell
Makeup: Michelle from Michmakeover

The beauty of photography is that every shot can be unique. While I love working in Singapore, its always nice to get an afternoon to work with a model who has a look and feel that is very different to the local scene. So different that we managed to squeeze out 4 different looks!

The first shoot we did was more of a sporty look. The model wanted to hit the ground running as the sports feel was her request. See what I did there? Sports ... hit the ground running ... huh? :)

Lighting setup here was main light a silver umbrella and filled by a 3x1 softbox

For the second look we started to emphasise skin tones in a classic yet simple way. Main light was a silver umbrella except now all the way to the side. No reason things need to be complicated to get a great shot.
There was some trial and error though, I tried in from the front at first but the light was too flat and boring for me.

Moving right along into our 3rd setup I made use of a beauty dish for the main light along with an octa fill. Strip light on the side from the back to complete the setup. I love how the light and shadows sculpts the dimensions of her face here. I'd like to think the lighting did a lot of the work here but wow she is uniquely gorgeous!

Dress up time! Last shot was a fashion shoot done in collaboration with Nathaniel from a local brand called Mash-Up. Awesome model, awesome clothing and a happy photographer!
Lighting was a magnum reflector for main light and octa for fill! Sorry my bts image sucked, I forgot to take a proper one hah.

Marigold HL Milk Commercial Shoot

Been drinking Marigold products since I was a kid so to say it was super cool being part of their latest campaign would be an understatement! I really do enjoy working with brands that I use in my day to day life. Its just so rewarding having that connection with your work! I can't imagine thats only a photography thing, right?

Being a photographer on a TVC shoot can be quite interesting. The video side usually takes priority over the photography as it requires bulk of the time and budget which means that the photographer is often left with tight time constraints or limited remaining sunlight. No complaints! Its just the fact of life! I've been dabbling with video more lately so hopefully in the near future Ill just own all the sunlight and split it amongst my gear as I see fit! Jokes aside, its awesome watching videographers at work as there is so much complexity to what they do so really, no complaints. I'm thankful I had the trust of the brand to make the photography component of it all come together!

Alllllllll that being said, for this shoot in particular they actually wanted to use my images images for both the print and the video so I got the priority. Yay!

Not only was it great working with a brand that I use in my personal life but the talents were amazing! So many different ages and while everyone was great, kids win every time. At least the well behaved kids and I have been super fortunate to always work with the most well behaved kids! So cute, so tiny, so adorable and so fun to shoot!

One of the most rewarding things about gaining experience is the ability to give back to my industry colleagues. So with that I am happy to share this Pro Tip -> Kids love fart sounds! Also, they love when you pick them up and throw them around in the air (carefully ... without dropping them ... lol).

I find it important to always connect with your talents before the shoot, especially children. When they are involved, try if possible to plan the shoot around their schedule. you do not want to shoot a child during her nap time. Well behaved kids are a blessing and to a certain extent its important to cater to them.

For the images, we shot them straight on the coloured backgrounds that we knew we wanted to use in the ads. We didn't want to use a green screen as the green would be reflected the backdrop and cast a colour onto the talents which would looks very strange. Putting the talents in the coloured background that was used gave it a less composite look.

Great experience overall and as always it comes down to a great brand, great crew and great talents! Thank you everyone involved for making my life so easy!

Doing Personal Work

Its not ALL about contract and client work. Personal work is the best way to improve your own portfolio. While working with clients is always a wonderful opportunity and experience, you're still ultimately executing another persons vision. By working on your own shoots you get a chance to explore your own visions, test different gear under different settings and really just flow through a journey that hopefully gives you a better understanding of yourself and the different things you can do behind the camera. Of course it also gives you a wider range of portfolio items to show clients in the future!

A month ago I did a full day filled with 3 different shoots. Why 3 in 1 day? Why not!?! :) Fitness, Lifestyle and Beauty. With that kind of schedule the day was a bit rushed but a lot of fun!

I got to work with the gorgeous Carla D. for the fitness shoot! She came in full of energy, smiles and was super easy to work with and even brought her own fitness outfits in since she has a relationship with Nike! Awesome energy and brings her own styles to work with? Yes please! Getting a stylist for personal shoots can often be quite difficult and since I was fortunate enough that all the talents that day brought their own outfits, I was able to skip the hassle of having to arrange a stylist. Considering how packed the day was and that this was all planned a bit last minute, this definitely made my life easier and the day smoother!

For this shoot I mainly used 2 Profoto Deep Translucent Umbrella XL along with the available sunlight. It was my first time only working with the umbrellas but I love how soft and beautiful the light was. Beautiful shoots don't have to have complicated setups! Keeping it simple sometimes is the easiest way to let the camera do the rest of the work. Throughout the day though there wasn’t all that much available light so I did end up having to to add some backlight glow in in post production. Much more straight forward though than over complicating the shoot day itself.

I recently lost my phone so I also lost all my behind the scenes set up images. These lighting setups will have to do!

Second up for the day was my beauty shoot and I wanted to do something fairly natural with girls of different skin tones. Super happy I was able to get Tanisha and Celine who were a pleasure to work with! They both had a young and fresh, yet elegant and classy look to them. They also had good skin which makes things a lot easier on a beauty shoot. As it was my first time shooting 2 girls at the same time in a beauty shoot I made sure to do some research on reference images so I could find some posing ideas. No need to always reinvent the wheel! Learn from others and add your own twist!

For this shoot I used a silver umbrella as main light with light hitting the wall behind and one reflector below their faces for fill.

Now for the last shoot of the day I wanted to do a lifestyle shoot of friends hanging out and playing boardgames. I got another two talents to come along and we shot this at the ground floor of the studio. I had games that were generously loaned by minds café.

For lighting, I orignally wanted to use mostly the sunlight that comes through the transparent celing of ther location. However this shoot got delayed when the beauty shoot took a little too long so the natural light was basically gone. In the end, I used one light on the translucent umbrella and another facing the wall. The light sources for this shoot had to be pretty big as I wanted to emulate natural lighting.
I do like how it's turned out, shoot was super fun and I think everybody enjoyed it!

3 different shoots, 3 different looks, 1 location and very minimal props! Really happy with how things turned! Keep it simple, explore your own visions and ideas and most importantly have fun!
